Yep, it’s a fairly common tip that most people know about. If you leave comments on other blogs then other people can click through from your comment to your blog. That’s a simple formula for blog traffic. Nice.

But did you know the real secret power of blog commenting?

Blog comments are great for bringing in direct referrals - that means people who click the link in your comment to come visit your blog. But that’s only one benefit. A very powerful benefit that is often not discussed is that leaving a comment gets the attention of the blogger who owns that blog.

Are you super excited when someone leaves a comment on your blog? Yeah, I bet you are, and guess what, you are not alone - most bloggers love it when people leave comments on their blog.

What this means is by leaving a comment, for a brief second, you have 100% of the attention of the blogger when they first receive email notification of your new comment. It’s during that time you have an opportunity to make something happen.

You need to use that brief moment of captured attention to slap the blogger in the face and show them how interesting you are. You can do this by leaving an amazing comment - something thought provoking, or challenging, or powerful - a tip or answer to a question. It needs to be so much more than “I think your blog is great”.

The immediate results of doing this may not seem significant but what you are doing is creating awareness for you. The other blogger now knows you exist. If you impressed him or her with a great comment you will no longer be “just another commenter” you will now be that smart guy who left that profound comment or helped to solve a problem.

So how can this lead to more traffic for you?

What happens, and this occurs over time so have patience, is other bloggers will start to take notice of you because of all your amazing comments. Then one day they may write an article that trackbacks your blog or even directly references one of your blog posts. This one link often results in a lot of traffic, much more then the trickle of direct referrals you get from the comments.

As you can see it’s not specifically the comments themselves that generate the traffic directly. The secret is that comments generate attention - they show other people that you exist and you provide value when you say something. This is the real key to powerful commenting for blog traffic.

Be Prepared To Comment

    Yaro,

    I agree. I’ve been leaving comments on most blogs I read. One other thing to mention is that big sites like FastCompany let you comment too. They get a lot of traffic. So that works great.

    You might want to mention the importance of being the first one to comment. I think being #1 on a popular article can bring in you in some nice traffic too.

    I enjoy reading comments on my own site and others. If I like the comment I often go and look at the commentor’s site. Leaving a comment on problogger brings in some nice referrals.

    Do you want I tell you how to do your blog boring? Block comments! Many bloggers block comments because spam. But if you block comments, you kill your community! Post comments anywhere, but do not block comments on your own blogs.

    I was just looking at the comments and noticed the last few were talking about Brisbane, you guessed it thats where I am from.

    My site is all about Traveling from Brisbane to Europe. I am up to a few thousand hits now without doing too much. It will be intereting to see how many more I can get following a few of your tips and advice.

    I’ve been perusing your blog and I like what I see.
    I believe that there is alot of power in blogging. Power that I have not unleashed yet, but hope to.
    I started my blog as my first attempt at internet marketing and I’m not sorry. I’m gaining alot of experience through it and I enjoy putting my thoughts down.
    I’m a bit concerned, though, about what you said about needing to really EXCEL at something to blog about it well. I am just documenting my journey into internet marketing. It’s something that I am passionate about but I am far from being an expert at it. Nonetheless, people enjoy reading my blog.
    I don’t get tons of traffic. About 35 visitors a day.
    I do post comments on other blogs and on forums and this is what brings the majority of my visitors.
    I am also being conscientious about posting, posting, posting.
    I hope I become a successful blogger like you!!!!

    Hi Dena - it really depends what your definition of “well” is.

    If you want exceptional results - like over 1000 daily readers - you need consistent, exceptional content or be very good at marketing your blog. It helps if you excel at what you blog about because that generally translates into good blog content.

    Without those ingredients it can be hard to even break the 100 daily visitors mark.

    Yeah, well, I guess I won’t be hitting the 1000 mark any time soon.
    I am really not “exceptional” at anything. So, all I can do is my best and hope for the best. I wonder how many bloggers really get 1000 daily readers at their blogs. You can probably count them on one hand? Maybe two hands?
    All I know that if I strive to be “great” I won’t even be good and I’ll just be frustrated!

    Dena - and that is a totally fine thing to do! If you keep at it long enough you will become exceptional (however I expect there are things you are already exceptional at - you probably just don’t blog about them - everyone has natural talents).

    It’s true though, most bloggers don’t get to the 1000 visitors a day mark, it’s not the norm, however my goal is to teach the skills to get there so I tend to focus on that number a lot.

    But you are quite right about being frustrated, and it doesn’t stop once you get to the 1000 per day mark either. Now I get frustrated trying to get to 2000 RSS subscribers or 5000 daily visitors - there is always another higher goal.

    I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A little while back, I was browsing through
    newsgroups and came across an article similar to this that could make you thousands of dollars
    within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So, I thought, “Yeah, right, this must be a

    to each of the 6 names and addresses stated in the article. You then place your name and address

    thought about trying it. I figured: “what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right?” Then
    I invested the measley $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!…within 7 days, I started getting money in
    the mail! I was shocked. I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept comming in. In my
    first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week, I had made a total of over
    $1,000.00. In the third week, I had over $10,000 and it’s still growing. This is now my fourth
    week, and I have made a total of just over $42,000 and it’s still commong in rapidly. It’s certianly
    worth $6.00 and 6 stamps, I have spent more money on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this
    works, and most importantly, why this works…Also, make sure you print a copy of this article
    NOW, so you can get the information off it as you need it. I promise that if you follow the
    directions EXACTLY, that you will start making money that you thought possible by diong

    24,000 groups.) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you

    use it again and again.

    Step 2: Open a blank “notepad” file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. Form the
    edit menu, select “paste”. This will place a copy of the letter into the notepad so that it can add
    your name into the bottom of the list, and then change the numbers on the list.
    Step 3: Save your new notepad file as a “.txt” file. If you want to do your postings in different
    settings, you’ll always have this file to go back to.
    Step 4: Use netscape or internet explorer and try to search for various newsgroups (on-line
    forums, message board, chat sites, discussions).
    Step 5: Visit these message boards, and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text
    of this letter and selecting “PASTE” from, the edit menu. Fill in the subject, this will be the hedder
    that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post
    message button. Your done with your first one! Congratulations…Thats it! All you have to do is
    jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30
    seconds for each news group! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN,
    THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF
    200** That is it! You will be recieving money from around the world within days! You may
    eventually want to rent a P.O. Box due to the large amount of mail you will recieve. If you wish to
    stay annonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the post man will deliver it. **JUST
    MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT**
    Now the why part: out of 200 postings, say I only recieve 5 replies (a very low example). So then
    I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who sent me $1.00
    make the minimum of 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons resopnd to each
    of the origional 5, this is an additional $25.00 for me. Now, those 25 each make 200 minimum
    posts, with my name at #4, and only 5 replies to each. This brings in an aditional $125.00. Now,
    those 125 persons turn around and post a minimum 200 with my name at #3, and recieve 5 replies
    each, I will make an additional $625.00. O.K., now here’s the fun part, each of those 625 people
    post a minimum of 200 letters with my name at #2, and they recieve 5 replies each. That just made
    me $3,125!!! Thjose 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name
    at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 react, I will recieve an additional $15,625.00!! With an
    investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the
    latest posting in the newsgroups and send out another $6.00 to the names on the list, putting your
    name at #6 and start posting again. The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of
    people all over the world are joining the internet and reading these articles every day! JUST LIKE
    YOU ARE NOW!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so…People have
    said, “what if the plan is played out, and no one sends you the money?” So what! What are the
    chancesd of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who
    are joining the internet and newsgroups every day who are willing to give it a try? Anyway, it is
    only $6.00 for a chance at thousands. Estamites are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day,
    with thousands of those joining the actual internet. Remember, play fairly and honestly, and this will
    really work. You would not want someone to cheat you the same way you may be cheating.
