The Power Of Credibility

One of the seriously positive benefits of blogging is the credibility you can build in your chosen field. If you blog well and blog often and the topics you write about inform people, you will quickly become associated with those topics as someone who knows something of value. This is called credibility.

Credibility is a powerful force and can have many positive impacts on your life. It can make it easier for you to sell something since your credibility is a stamp of approval on any products you offer. It can make it easier for you to open doors for partnerships since people want to work with you. It can get you clients because it’s a form of reputation that stimulates word of mouth. Of course, it can also get you blog traffic, which is nice because as I mentioned, a blog builds your credibility - that a good combination and symbiotic relationship.

When I first started blogging I wrote quite a few articles about search engine optimization (SEO) - techniques you can use on your website to get better rankings in search engines. I had some experience and knowledge in this area because I researched a lot about website marketing during the late nineties as part of running hobby websites. You can find many of my SEO Articles on my blog.

After I had blogged for a while it became apparent that I was developing a reputation for being an SEO expert, which at the time quite surprised me because I didn’t start blogging with the intention of promoting myself as an SEO expert. It was an excellent benefit I never saw coming and really opened my eyes up to the potential of blogging for credibility building - all I had to do was write about what I already knew and suddenly I was an expert!

A Nice Surprise

Just this week one of my friends, Jamsi, sent me an instant message pointing out that I was featured on the front page of a very prominent online advertising company’s website - Text-Link-Ads.com.

Here is a screenshot -

Text Link Ads Feature Link

Text-Link-Ads is a very popular service, which thousands of website owners use everyday, so the traffic and exposure from this link is fantastic. I don’t know how long it will stay up on the front page, but right now as I type this it is still there and has been for a few days. It’s in the prime real estate on the site and I was quite chuffed to see it there - It was a total surprise - but a good one!

I’ll put my SEO hat on for a second and point out that Text-Link-Ads has a PageRank 6 and certainly many thousands of backlinks - I’ve linked to it myself on numerous times because I use and recommend the site to other people. Having a backlink from a site like this does good things for my blog’s PageRank and PageAuthority. Now these concepts might be new to you and totally confusing at the moment - I can’t explain them in this blog post but if you are interested try my blog article - PageRank Explained.

To be honest the PageRank and the direct traffic are nice benefits but the real result from this link is the enhancement to my own credibility and awareness. My name is exposed to a lot of people and simply by featuring as a testimonial on a popular site I will further be perceived as an expert.

But how exactly does credibility get you blog traffic?

This story is a perfect example of how credibility alone can bring you traffic to your blog. The only reason I got this feature link was because the owners of Text-Link-Ads believe that having a testimonial from me on their site enhances their credibility. Having “Yaro Starak” recommend their service means they get more customers. For me, having Text-Link-Ads refer to my name with a quote and link to my site, means I get all the benefits I mentioned above.

Now you might think this is just a case of two websites/organizations patting each other on the back for mutual benefit, which it certainly is, but in no way did I seek to create this relationship overtly. As I said it was a complete surprise to me, I did not ask for it.

Why did it happen? - Because I blogged. Because I kept blogging and built up a reputation. As you can see, success builds on success.

Can You Build A Reputation?

There is no reason why you can’t have similar stories to tell about your blog if you establish yourself as an expert in your niche. If you blog about something you know a lot about it’s only a matter of pumping out pillar-level quality articles on a consistent basis. If you really do know about something your experience will shine through.

Not everyone has enough experience and knowledge to do it of course - if you have only just started out in life you may need to do some living and some learning before you get enough built up experience to be an expert at something. If you are young or just starting out in your field you should focus on study and trying things, eventually you will learn skills that other people will want to learn from you giving you the potential to become an expert in your field.

Oh and of course, if you enjoyed this topic on credibility building, there are more materials in Blog Traffic School about building your expert status and personal brand. Stay tuned, it’s coming soon!

Hi, I would like to know. How long does one take to build creadibility in a niche using a blog?

  3. July 25th, 2006 | 3:41 pm

Hi Jag - That’s like asking “how long is a piece of string?”

It’s impossible for me to give you an accurate answer, it could take months or even years. It’s something intangible, I couldn’t really provide an exact measure for when someone has credibility in general.

If you keep blogging and people start offering you things, or asking for advice, or following your recommendations or proposing partnerships or quoting you or telling other people to read your work or any number of these things, it’s a sign you have built some credibility.

Thanks Ivan, I appreciate the feedback. I think Darren and I are shooting for different goals though. I wouldn’t have a hope of keeping as current as he does with what is going on in the blogosphere. I’m more focused on the traffic strategies in particular.

@Jag: Some people say that becoming an expert at something requires 10,000 hours, or about 5 years full-time (40 hr/wk). Don’t know if that holds with the Internet :)

@Ivan: I don’t know if you can compare Darren and Yaro. Both are great, and have different styles. They both have their niche.

I have red your news letter to day. You have given the eaxample of ’steve’, for a case. You are written that, he was
earning $2000 per month. He was blogging on blogger.com.
My question is, how could he generated traffic to his blogs?
I have so many blogs is 21publish.com. And I have added google ads to my blogs. He lost that traffic in midnight, it is secondary. But he had earned so much money from blogging.
    Please tell me about steave.
I am waiting for your reply.

    Hi Yaro!

Nice to see your new blog — looks great and I will visit for tips and tricks. One never stops building traffic!

I can say a raucous “Amen” to your article based on personal experience. I started my blog 8 months ago and probably had a sum total of 5 regular readers a week. This included my sister and Dad, and I had to encourage them to read it. But I just kept writing about what I thought my target market would be interested in. A few months ago, I got a very nice plug from one of my heros, the prolific and very well connected venture capitalist Guy Kawasaki. Suddenly, my stats skyrocketed, and I have developed a nice healthy group of regular readers as a result.

A nice side benefit is that I have had lots of inquiries about partnerships, and have received at least 10 books to review (what, you care what I think about them?). Most amazingly, I got a very well-connected book agent interested in my writing and am now developing a book proposal to shop around to major publishers.

If you would have told me 8 months ago all this would have happened as a result of blogging regularly, I would have laughed at you. It is a quite wonderous thing.

I agree with you that you can’t force it - don’t overtly ask people to link to you, or send the dreaded “I’ll link to you ONLY if you link to me.” I have gotten a few of those messages, and they just make me want to run screaming. That is just plain bad karma.

Link to others liberally, comment on blogs you admire and write about things you care deeply about. Credibility will come as a natural result of these activities.

Hope all is good with you — wishing you continued success and lots of link love!

    All the best,
    -Pam

@Pamela: beautiful, inspiring comment. Much luck w/ your book proposal and other activities. (Sorry, Yaro, I just had to give cheers to Pamela’s comment.)

  10. July 28th, 2006 | 2:10 pm

Hi Pam - you are definitely enjoying all the great possibilities from blogging. I feel exactly the same. I’m often amazed at the outcomes that come from simply writing to a blog on a regular basis. It really is a simple way to get some tremendous benefits, as long as you can write well, help people and stick to it long enough.

    Raj - no problem!

  11. July 29th, 2006 | 3:52 pm

Glad I found your blog somehow - great advice and you’re still on the text-link-ads homepage. Very inspiring to read the comments to this post - I started my Marketing Transformations Network blog in June and am leaning towards focusing on the PR niche. Will keep yours in mind as a companion resource. Your writing style is clear, easy to read and action-oriented.

  18. September 16th, 2006 | 4:02 pm

I concur that being perceived as a subject matter expert is invaluable and I also agree that establishing domain expertise does not typically happen overnight. I might also add that just believing you’re an expert and actually being one may not be one in the same. Being a subject matter expert also carries a burden of respsonsibility to help and not to harm. If one just promotes themselves as an expert sans the actual qualifications to do so they will inevitably harm others and in the process harm themselves.

The above being noted building a personal brand is a powerful tool and one that should be pursued by those who plan to leverage their brand responsibly. You might enjoy reading a post I previously authored entitled “The Power of Personal Branding” which can be viewed here: http://www.n2growth.com/blog/index.php?p=53

    Hi Yaro,

Well done for a great post - and for getting such a great backlink on text-link-ads.com.

I found that within only a few months I was getting heaps of traffic to my blog (which I only started in April) as I discovered SEO for myself - its at: http://www.jamesschramko.com/coolest-guy-on-the-planet.html

I used some of your blog advice to get it working faster. Also your advice has helped me get a wordpress blog going now since you pointed out some of the advantages.

    Thanks

great work Yaro. Getting link by a big site is like hitting a jackpot. You get tons of hits the first few days and its dies off but in the end, the pagerank matters. Take care.

  22. November 13th, 2006 | 1:10 pm

This give me something to ponder and to work on.

  23. November 24th, 2006 | 11:32 pm

    Yaro~

So excited to see the new blog…thanks for this article and great tips! I agree the thing a lot of people don’t get is that it takes TIME and quality posts.

Some seem to think cranking out a bunch of muck and posting several times a day will do it. But your success proves that quality posts, articles that really help the reader with their own work is where it’s at.

Congrats on the the BIG link and continued link-love karma to you. I love your “back to basics” approaches and your writing style is simple enough even for a non-techie like me.

    Stay passionate friend,
    Kam

    Hi Yaro,
You provide terrific advice and I congratulate you on your recent successes, including the backlink. Now I’m wondering about this: How about either using or not using your real name on your blogs? I really, really want to use my real name because I believe that too will help build my credibility. But this can be a gray area because some people may have reasons (day jobs) why they need to be subtle in their niches in the beginning. Opinions?

  26. December 29th, 2006 | 5:39 pm

I don’t think consumers really know or believe that. They just don’t trust us. And I think it’s beginning to have an impact on response.

  27. January 8th, 2007 | 4:34 am

    Hi Ana,

My first answer is to use your real name on your blog and write content to your blog that won’t jeopardise your job - in fact you could write on topics that might paint you in a better light if your employers found your writing.

If you don’t think that is possible then perhaps anonymity is a better path until you leave your job and find a less sensitive employer or start working for yourself.

    Hi Yaro,

Thank you for teaching me more about blogging.
I created my first Wordpress blog last January. I try to make improvement after reading your newsletter.

    Thank you for everything :)

  34. March 20th, 2007 | 5:31 pm

I have been blogging for 3 years now and I started with blogger.com. I still have that blog but I moved all of my blogging to my own hosted Wordpress site. Consistancy of blogging although my topic matter has changed a couple of times due to changes of direction forced by changes in the way the internet worked, has built up the name of Wizardgold.

I get search traffic with people looking for information about forex trading and trading on Betfair and also people just looking for the wizardgold sites.

I haven’t found Adwords to be a big earner yet, averaging only a few cents a day. But still going to be enough to pay the hosting bill, so thats a start. Should get better seeing as Google are taking steps to weed out the people that abuse the adwords system.

One of the best things that has happened to my blog is my podcasting activities. I started with Audio podcasting and have moved to video podcasting. It is great to be able to show people in a step by step screencast how to do something. Now I keep the audio podcasts just informing how things are going rather than tellling my subscribers how. I even have my Podcasts available in the iTunes store, just have to search for Wizardgold

As a Mac user it is very easy to make a podcast either video or audio as I have most of the tools already to use, and the extras are cheap to buy in also. I use iShowU to grab the video and use Garageband and visualhub to get it so I can publish. I get some reallly professional results this way. There are 27 Wizardgold podcasts so far and there are more to come…..

Feedburner is great I use it to promote my RSS feeds and very useful for the stats too. Here is the feed to one of my sites - http://feeds.feedburner.com/WizardgoldBetfairTrader.

Anyway bit of a long comment but I find it interesting to read your stuff Yaro so I thought a bit of feedback would be nice.

    All the best

Hi Yaro! As always, a great post and inspiring too.

One of the things I most like about your blog is that I can understand what you say because your explanations are clear and simple.

That may not sound like a compliment, but the truth of the matter is that there are a great many ‘technical’ blogs giving advice, but for the more technically challenged, such as myself, they’re merely preaching to the choir.

It takes far great skill to explain a complex issue in comprehensible language.
    Best wishes

I am glad to post my views and points in this blog, but I must say that webmaster of this blog has done a very great job to make his blog more informative and more discussable but unfortunately everthing is same here that more than 80% in this and other blogs post their comments for making spam!!!, so i will really all this spam links to google band tool, because webmaster makes blogs for making discuss and for sloving each other problems. thanks http://www.gordoniihoodia.net

After what seems like forever (but is really only 4 days) my v7ndotcom elursrebmem entry finally ranks, coming in somewhere between 25 and 30 depending on what ranking tool and data center you happen to be using (SERP). However now that every SEO on the planet has a blog I thought I might cruise around the blogosphere and see how blogs are being used in the contest. http://www.bigpenispill.net

  47. July 25th, 2007 | 7:20 pm

    Spam Comments detected!

  48. July 30th, 2007 | 1:29 am

If you’re a blogger (or a blog reader), you’re painfully familiar with people who try to raise their own websites’ search engine rankings by submitting linked blog comments like “Visit my discount pharmaceuticals site.” This is called comment spam, we don’t like it either, and we’ve been testing a new tag that blocks it. From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links won’t get any credit when we rank websites in our search results. This isn’t a negative vote for the site where the comment was posted; it’s just a way to make sure that spammers get no benefit from abusing public areas like blog comments, trackbacks, and referrer lists. http://www.gordoniihoodia.net

  49. August 5th, 2007 | 1:02 am

A blog which doesn’t allow comments is still a blog. When I started blogging over six years ago, there were many many blogs already. Yes, I know it seems to many as if in the year 2000 you had to hunt around to find a blog. You didn’t. They were “everywhere”. Most have just closed down since then.

    High Yaro,

Thanks for a good post. It does come down to writing regularly and providing good content I guess.

I think the real value of blogs (that can’t be delivered by other media) is the comments. I think the dialogue means that people come to ‘own’ the blogs they comment. This leads to them coming back and recommending them to others (this is founded on good content of course).

    What do you think?

    Hi Yaro,

There’s no doubt that the number one thing people on the Internet appear to be searching for is traffic. Whether it’s for more people to read their blog or for more people to buy their product or service.

So a blog like yours and Tinu Abayomi-Paul’s is always going to be popular.
