How To Be An Exceptional Blogger

Read the first part of this series: Competing For Attention In An Attention Deficit Blogosphere

There is only one way to be an exceptional blogger - find what it is about you that makes you exceptional and funnel that through your blog. You must leverage your unique special talents in every blog post you make and be certain that your blogging goals are derived from your talents.

If you don’t know anything about cars don’t try and be a market leading car blogger. If you only just started learning about programming in PHP, or training for a triathlon, or how to build furniture, don’t blog in these areas expecting to be the best. If you are only “good” at making money online, don’t try and become a top blogger expecting to replicate the success of Darren Rowse, or Shoemoney, or any of the other Internet business owners who are also successful bloggers.

It’s Easy To Be Good

You may argue that, yes, you can still be successful blogging about topics you are only currently good at or learning about, and I won’t argue with that, but being “good” means you might get a few hundred readers a day and will languish with all the other “good” bloggers doing the same thing. If you want “great” you need to be great, you need to offer great information that helps others become great too. Exceptional is not equal to good.

People enjoy reading blogs by other people who are beginners, who “tell their story” as they grow and learn, and in fact that is the exact premise I used when I started my blog, Entrepreneurs-Journey. But that’s not going to be enough if you don’t possess other exceptional talents that you can leverage as you tell your story. A talent may be something unique you are building or creating, your writing style, or your method of doing things.

In my case I had over 7 years of Internet marketing experience behind me that I could talk about on my blog. Other bloggers might be successful because they always get the latest news first, or provide the best practical advice on a certain topic, or are going through a unique experience and can relate stories in a compelling manner (for example a parent blogging about raising their first child, or a business owner attempting to create a new industry with their start-up company). It all comes from areas in your life where you have leveraged your talents to develop skills, which you can then use to provide unique, exceptional value to others via your blog.

Be Aware Of Your Present Reality, Get Excited About Your Future

Don’t feel bad if what I am saying is making you have doubts about your current blogging. Remember it’s okay not to be the best at something and you can derive a lot of pleasure and rewards from just being good. You may not have the most popular blog or be considered a leader in your field or be making the most money, but that’s not the end of the world. It’s okay to be average if you are content to be there. Remember happiness is not necessarily derived from being at the top of the heap and in fact if you only derive happiness from being the best of the best you are probably unhappy most of the time. It’s almost impossible to be the best forever, even Tiger Woods has to retire one day.

If you want more, if you strive to be a top contender, then treat your current situation as a stepping stone towards greatness. What you are learning from me is part of the equation. Treat this article as a lesson to start thinking about what makes you special and how you can leverage your unique talents in your blogging.

If you don’t know what your unique talents are just yet don’t worry. You may be surprised to learn that I’m not one hundred percent sure of mine either. I know what I am good at but I’m not quite sure how it translates to success and gratification for me. Perhaps you can help me discover my talents - how I can help others in an exceptional way. Why do you read my content? How do I help you, and why do you choose Yaro Starak over the other bloggers out there?

You can see by the questions I ask you that the way to find your unique talents is to ask what it is that people like about you and your blog.

  • How do others derive value from you?
  • What value do they derive?
  • What type of person are you attracting?
  • What are their problems and how is it that what you blog about helps them?

If you start to answer these questions you start to dig a little deeper into what it is about you that is exceptional. Once you tap into this you have the basis for every success in your life - and this goes way beyond blogging too. Knowing your talents means you can excel in every aspect of life because you can stop wasting time on what you are not good at, what you are not meant to do.

Look For Flow States

When you sit down to blog or do anything in your life look for times when you are in a “Flow State”. A flow state is when you forget everything else going on and you attack your current activity with a passion. The world seems to melt away as you perform the activity. You are surprised at how quickly time seems to pass when this happens and you forget where you are completely, indulging one hundred percent in the activity. You look forward to these activities, enjoy the process of completing them and your output is your best work.

This is your flow state and this is where your talents are expressed. Watch for these times and attempt to find out what is is you enjoy about them and then try and translate that into content for your blog. This may mean starting a new blog completely on a different topic and you may not be certain where it will go, but by expressing your talents via your blog your content will be exceptional, and this is the key to rise to the top.

Do You Have To Be An Exceptional Writer To Be An Exceptional Blogger?

Yes and no. I definitely believe being a great writer is a huge advantage in the blogosphere and I know my writing style has been instrumental in helping me attain what success I have enjoyed. Although I consider writing one of my talents, by no means is it a talent for every exceptional blogger out there.

What makes a blogger exceptional might be her ability to always break news first in a certain industry, and in this case her talent may translate into exceptional research or networking skills. The result of this is a drive and motivation to keep up to date about a certain industry and thus maintain connections with all the right people. No other blogger cares enough to do this, nor are they connected enough in the industry. In this case it’s not the quality of the writing that counts, it’s how current the news is.

There are some areas where good writing is more important than others, but as always, content quality is the critical factor and it’s producing the content where you can put your talents to use. Your writing will improve as you blog. If you find your lack of basic writing skills a major hindrance to blogging, then you may benefit from some training before diving into serious blogging. You know yourself best and if you believe your content is good and you can express it in reasonably comprehensible English you will get results - the quality of the writing is not the deal breaker - the content is.

Strategic Blogging

Everything I have discussed in this article ties back into your blog strategy. Once you know your talents you can form a strategic plan for what you want to achieve from your blog. Once you realize that your core skill is helping a certain type of person with a certain type of problem you can focus on maximizing your output quality by sticking to what you do best.

Strategic blogging is about extrapolating your purpose and your goals from your talents, and then using that data to create a blueprint to get to your destination. This is not an easy process and you may spend many months of “test” blogging until you finally hit what it is you want to get from your blog and how your talents can help you get there.

Most blogs that fail to gain any traction fail because the owner isn’t congruent. If you aren’t clear in your head regarding what you can offer to people, then people won’t find what you do compelling. How can you offer value to others without understanding what that value is to begin with?

If you are not sure of your blogging purpose yet don’t be afraid to experiment. The process of aligning your blogging goals with your talents it not simple and requires a lot of “feeling out” on your part. Signals will start to flash once you start down the right path. Your traffic will increase, people will openly thank you in comments and emails, and you will be constantly inspired by what you blog about. The flow of quality content will come easily and you will never be stuck for an idea for an article topic.

Once you have defined your purpose and you are clear about the value you provide to your target reader, it is time to formulate a strategy on how best to leverage your abilities. You must decide and plan for what you want from your blog in terms of rewards (money, fame, recognition, work, contracts, gigs, etc) and how you will get these rewards. Formulating a strategy is a lot easier once you know what your talent is because everything else is derived from it.

I’ll leave the topic of strategic blogging there. The process of formulating a blogging strategy is a lengthy topic, certainly too long for this already long article. If you are interested in contacting me for private coaching to determine and refine your blogging strategy please contact me via ReplytoYaro.com

Explore Your Talents

Determining your unique talents provides you with the key for becoming an exceptional blogger. It’s a creative process and worth exploring. Take some time to think about it and you just might be surprised where you end up. The answer isn’t always what you expect it to be.

Good luck!

Blog Traffic School Header & Footer Graphics Go Live

I figured it was about time to get some form of “coming soon” page on the BlogTrafficSchool.com index page.

You can take a look for yourself and yes, that is me in the graphics -

www.BlogTrafficSchool.com

The header will only be used for the sales pages and internally for members I am using the smaller Blog Traffic School logo because it doesn’t take as long to load. The footer is used throughout except on the blog that the course content is delivered through, which actually looks a lot like this blog you are reading now.

Let me know what you think!

Changes To The Blog Traffic School Membership System

It’s time for an update on the Blog Traffic School course. In between traveling from Australia to Canada I have been working with a web developer to get the membership back-end system up. Originally I was going to deliver Blog Traffic School through the AMember membership management system, but a few months ago I changed my mind and opted to use the Butterfly Marketing system (aff) instead.

Butterfly Marketing has a lot of extra features I wanted and I felt I wasn’t too far in development with AMember that I couldn’t make the change. However I realized due to other commitments and lack of technical skills I needed help so I brought in a Butterfly Marketing specialist to help with the implementation. We have been working really quickly together and it’s basically ready to go, I just need to get busy writing some content like the sales page.

One of the main features of the new system that I really like is the ability to offer different levels of membership. This allows me to offer an introductory free membership, which is what all members of my Blog Traffic Tips newsletter will receive after signing up.

The main feature of the free membership will of course be the traffic tips email newsletter, which you can already join now by filling in the form at the top of this blog - there just isn’t a membership system behind it yet. I am also going to collect all the resources I have ever released about blogging, including podcasts and articles, and make them available to free members. Most of the content you can already get online elsewhere but it will be great to bring it all together under one blog specific membership system, so even free members will receive tremendous value. No doubt over time I will continue to add more to the free resources section.

The system allows members to upgrade from a free member to a full member at any time by paying the course tuition. Paying for the upgrade will grant access to the full set of course resources, including the Blog Traffic School course. Over time I can add additional courses, products and related tools and have different memberships for each. The Butterfly Marketing system makes it all very easy and best of all it’s a super clean interface. I get complete control over the design and I’m well aware that simplicity works best so look for basic text to be the main feature, with a basic navigation system too. Blog Traffic School is about strategies, so it’s the content that matters the most.

Look for more launch news soon!

The Benefits Of Blogging

Any blogger who has taken their blogging seriously has earned some amazing results. Personally I have been literally blown away by the opportunities that have come my way as a result of just blogging. What makes it even more amazing is that nearly every opportunity was offered to me without me actually asking for it.

Here’s some examples of how blogging has benefited me:

  • I have been approached for consulting work yet I am not a consultant nor do I advertise myself as one.
  • I have been asked to be on the board of directors of start-up Internet companies.
  • I’ve been mentioned and linked to from various other blogs and websites, including some high profile sites, and listed as an expert in my field (although once again I never sought out the publicity).
  • Online and offline magazines have contacted me asking for contributions to their publications.
  • I’ve been approached to join blog networks.
  • I’ve been offered paying contract projects.
  • I’ve been invited to be a speaker at small networking events and even large seminars.
  • Other business owners have contacted me for advice or just to network with me, opening doors to literally hundreds of business opportunities and relationships.

And of course I’ve also made money, established a readership and given myself a fantastic platform of credibility and reputation to leverage for future business projects.

It’s hard not to like blogging. The return on investment is pretty spectacular if you do it well.

How Important Is SEO For Your Blog?

I was recently putting together a lesson for the final class in the Blog Traffic School course. This lesson is part of what I call the “advanced” materials - topics focused on taking your blog beyond the 1000 daily readers we aim for in Blog Traffic School, which are discussed in the concluding sections of the course. Essentially everything in Blog Traffic School can be used to grow your blog beyond 1000 readers, but for this particular lesson I wanted to focus on the things I have found that really brought my blog above the 1000 daily visitors mark and into the 2000+ daily readers milestone.

As I sat back and thought about it I realized there was one very powerful traffic source, one that many bloggers don’t think about too much, which accounted for a lot of my traffic once my blog had matured - the search engines. I say it had to “mature” for a reason, you see my blog received barely any search traffic for at least the first 4-6 months of its life. I had purchased a new domain name (entrepreneurs-journey.com) for it and while it was very easy to get my blog at least listed in the search engines, quite a few things had to happen before I started ranking well.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is an area that most bloggers will never get into in any real depth. At the highest level, very technical minded people are testing and tracking things to optimize search rankings for their websites and blogs. These people use controlled tests, playing with all the variables that make up a website - the words, code, links and so forth. Once they have results the rest of us can study their findings and apply the latest “theories” as tests for our own search engine rankings. Some things work well, some don’t.

In a lot of ways search engine optimization is an art form. It has fundamental principles which make you feel like it is a science - and a lot of people working in SEO will tell you it is and they will purport to having complete control over search engine results - but they would be lying. In reality everyone who works in SEO is guessing. Yes they have some very sound principles to work from but ultimately no direct control over the deciding factors - the search engine algorithms, which is as it should be or the system could be corrupted by those in power.

Why Does SEO Matter?

So what does all this have to do with your blog? As I stated once my blog had matured and grown past its first birthday I noticed that my articles started to show up in the first page of search engine results for some pretty relevant terms for my blog’s niche. While they don’t individually provide a lot of traffic, collectively it is a steady stream of new visitors - and this is the key - these are mostly new visitors.

Search engine traffic serves to bring in new visitors to your blog. Now I of course thoroughly recommend you work on building a loyal readership for your blog, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want new visitors coming in as well. Attracting new visitors is how your blog grows, and converting those new visitors into regular readers is the process you should be aiming to complete.

How To Get More Search Traffic To Your Blog

That’s the million dollar question isn’t it! Okay, first up if you know nothing about search engine optimization and you have time to really get your teeth into it, read this article series I wrote - The Top 8 Search Engine Optimization Techniques.

In that article I have collected the most relevant things you can do to help your blog’s SEO, however there is a lot to do and you may not be up for the task. If you don’t have the time or energy for in-depth SEO then here is my advice for you -

Focus your energies on one thing - get links from authority sites.

What are authority sites? They are websites that have a lot of links from other authority sites! Aha - catch 22 you say, and yes in a way it doesn’t sound fair does it. Authority sites are websites, and blogs are included, which the search engines consider to be authority sources of information. Generally if the site has lots of traffic, links from other authority sites and people doing searches keep finding the answers they want from these sites, you have the formula for authority status. It’s a hard thing to pinpoint but virtually every niche online has a handful of authority sites. Right now I bet every website you visit on a daily basis (perhaps besides your own) is an authority site for it’s niche.

When authority sites link to your site then your site gets some of that “authority” juice. It’s that juice that will help your blog climb higher in the rankings.

For the sake of clarification I want to state that your blog’s search engine ranking is dependent on a lot of variables and just focusing on authority links is only part of the picture, but in my opinion it is the most crucial and the most difficult to accomplish. To get a link from an authority site, or preferably lots of them, and from many different authority sites, you really need to be doing spectacular things or saying spectacular things or helping people in spectacular ways or have a spectacular PR person working for you. It’s by no means easy and it doesn’t (nor should it) happen over night. This is something that you build up to over time.

So essentially, once again my advice to you regarding your blog’s search engine rankings is to become spectacular. As simple as that :)

What Is The Most Powerful Blog Traffic Technique?

I spend a lot of time discussing blog traffic techniques that focus on what you can do online. While online techniques should form the core of your strategy to grow your blog, ultimately it’s offline communications that will take your blog traffic to the next level. How does this happen? Through word of mouth.

We all know how powerful word of mouth is. If you look back over the history of the most successful websites, those that have millions of visitors, it’s usually because they generated tremendous offline word of mouth that resulted in a “tipping point” for their traffic. No amount of search traffic, or backlinks or social bookmarks or pay per click advertising, or any mechanical traffic method can match the pure power of word of mouth to bring new visitors to your blog.

The thing is, you can’t directly control word of mouth with a high degree of influence. That’s the nature of the beast. Word of mouth is powerful because it’s people talking to people, friends chatting with friends - and sometimes directly, sometimes more covertly - recommending something to each other. If word of mouth is heavily influenced or someone attempts to exert control over it, it loses it’s power because the recommendation becomes tainted. The credibility of the information is lost. People don’t take action when information appears to be a sales pitch, a con, or an advertisement.

There is an art to making use of word of mouth for marketing purposes and in this case, for marketing our blogs. While you can’t directly control word of mouth, you certainly can take action to encourage it. It’s a subtle art, finding ways to generate word of mouth for your blog. The best way of course is to do something worth talking about, and as I have mentioned in previous blog articles, this is the core of successful publicity - and ultimately publicity is all about generating word of mouth. I’ll assume you are already working hard to be a remarkable blogger, doing remarkable things to generate word of mouth.

One Powerful Word Of Mouth Technique

I’ll end this article with one very simple, yet potentially powerful technique to stimulate word of mouth for your blog. You may be surprised at how simple it is, yet most bloggers don’t do it. Have you guessed?

Talk about your blog.

Yep, it’s not complex, it’s not rocket science. You are the perfect conduit for word of mouth since you make up 50% of the key ingredients required - you need at least two people - and you are one. All you need to do is find one other person and you have all the ingredients necessary for word of mouth marketing.

Since you will be promoting something of your own making, it’s harder for you not to appear to be making a sales pitch, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still powerful. All you need to do is mention you are blogging to your friends, your family, even random strangers you meet as you live your life, and I guarantee they will be interested. The fact is, right now, just being a blogger is interesting because blogs are new, cool and still somewhat curious to most people.

Talking about your blog can generate exponential exposure, as your friends tell their friends about your blog, and so on and so on, creating a pyramid growth pattern of word of mouth. Remember too, this will be natural word of mouth, you won’t be involved once you have planted the seed of awareness in people. Your blog will just “come up” in conversation as they talk about you, or about the Internet or any topic that might trigger a thought about your blog. All you need to do is create the initial awareness.

I remember a recent trip I made to a local real estate agent when I was doing some research about property. The admin person at the office turned out to be a guy in a band who knew about blogs because he was a heavy user of MySpace. We talked for a few minutes and of course I told him about my blog. Now I don’t know whether he eventually visited my blog, but I did provide him the URL. If he did, he may even be reading this article right now and may have told some of his friends or family. That one conversation could have resulted in hundreds of people eventually coming to my blog as the word of mouth spread from person to person.

That’s the thing with word of mouth - you can never be sure exactly when or where or who is involved, all you can do is encourage it, then sit back and watch your blog traffic grow. What’s important is that if you aren’t talking about your blog now, if you are ashamed or shy or whatever, that you change this attitude and start being vocal. Tell everyone you know about your blog - it’s one the easiest traffic techniques you have available at no cost - and it can potentially be the most powerful.

Audio Podcast: Building Blog Traffic With Darren Rowse From ProBlogger.net

One of the most popular podcasts I ever did was with Darren Rowse from ProBlogger.net, where we sat down and had a half hour chat about a few things, mostly related to blogging and plenty of discussion on how to get traffic. It’s a few months old now and some of you may have already heard it but I know many people on my blog traffic tips newsletter won’t have, so here is a chance to check it out and have a listen for yourself.

You can download the podcast from this post -

Using Publicity As A Blog Traffic Tool

When I think back over the things I did that brought in the most traffic to my blogs it’s almost always triggered by some form of publicity. The power of publicity is hard to beat in terms of raw numbers in a short period of time. While other techniques might bring in more traffic, perhaps a better quality of traffic, but over a longer period of time, it’s hard to find a technique that can garner so much attention in a short time frame as doing something newsworthy.

I wouldn’t necessarily label what I have done to generate publicity in the past for my blogs as “stunts”, but certainly it’s always because of an event or something I did, which was dramatic enough to compel others to write about me and link to my blog. While I am no public relations expert nor have I studied publicity, as someone who has been the beneficiary of publicity and also watched closely as other bloggers have been the target, I think I have a good grasp of the subject, at least when it comes to blog promotion.

There are two key ingredients -

  1. You must do or say something unique, even outlandish, and definitely special
  2. It really helps if you are a celebrity

Generally those two points are very interrelated. If you are basically a nobody and not many people know you or your blog, your publicity stunt has to be huge. If you are already somewhat well known your stunt doesn’t necessarily have to be as significant because people are already watching you and talking about your blog. For super-celebrities they barely have to do anything to be the subject of publicity.

As bloggers we are members of the blogosphere, which is a fantastic place for publicity to thrive. Bloggers love to talk about other bloggers, to weigh in with their opinion on a subject started by another blogger and be part of the conversation. Consequently once you establish yourself in the blogosphere, while you may not be a celebrity elsewhere, having some exposure as a blogger in your industry can be enough to ripe some significant rewards from publicity.

Blog Traffic School Lesson On Publicity

In Blog Traffic School I’ve put together a 5000 word lesson on publicity, including some case studies where publicity has had a huge impact, and also some practical steps you can take to generate traffic for your blog using publicity. I don’t discuss publicity until late in the course because it’s important to establish some status (fame, exposure) for your blog so you can maximize the results from whatever publicity actions you take.

Relationship Networking For Blog Traffic

As many of you will be aware since you came from the link in the last few days, Darren Rowse from Problogger.net published a blog post - How to Find Traffic for a New Blog - which linked to my last article - How To Launch A Brand New Blog.

Darren and I are good friends and we met through blogging a few months ago (close to a year now I’d say). Darren features in a few sections of the Blog Traffic School course and in one particular area, the relationship building section, I’ve recounted the story of how Darren and I first met. It’s an important story because it really demonstrates the power of relationship networking - when bloggers work together to increase exposure for their blogs. I can’t republish the whole class here because that would be giving away too much - plus it’s over 3000 words for just that class!

The last few days since Darren’s post have once again illustrated the power of relationship building for blog traffic. Darren sent through over 700 unique visitors in two days and this would not have happened if Darren and I did not have some form of relationship.

Besides the raw traffic influx from Problogger, the following additional beneficial events occurred:

I had over 60 new sign-ups to my Blog Traffic Tips Newsletter in 48 hours and they are still continuing to come in.

A bunch of other bloggers joined in on the conversation, including -

Plus there were sixteen (…and counting) comments that came through on my post plus quite a few were made on some of the older posts in this blog.

Unpredictable Traffic Techniques

It’s important to note that my article sat online for quite a few days before Darren found it and it sparked enough interest in him to produce an article of his own and link to this blog. It may never have happened at all and I was surprised when it did (I love waking up to all those emails from comments, newsletter sign-ups and people saying hello - and yes I’m still getting through them all now - I will get back to you I promise!). The run off effect is completely unpredictable. That’s the beauty of blogging and why building your blog traffic is so up and down. You never know what’s going to happen next.

That being said, there are certainly some proactive things you can do to enhance your chance of triggering an event like this and keep it growing. I’ve covered some techniques in more detail in the course, but just for example posting an article like this after the fact encourages further discussion and helps keep the traffic flowing. I send some traffic to the blogs who took the time to contribute to the conversation as a way to return the favor, expand communication channels and build relationships.

Remember you have to be in the conversation to benefit from the traffic reading the conversation.

Welcome To The Blog Traffic School Pre-Launch Blog

Hi and welcome to the brand new blog covering the pre-launch of Blog Traffic School, the ultimate course to teach you how to grow your blog traffic from 0 to 1000 daily readers.

My name is Yaro Starak and I am the creator of Blog Traffic School. In case you don’t know me already you can read all about my history and credentials at Entrepreneur’s Journey, my blog about business. In particular you may want to read my business timeline.

Blog Traffic School

I came up with the idea for blog traffic school at the start of this year, 2006. I spent all of the last six months of 2005 growing my blog from 0 to over 1000 daily readers. I learnt so much about building blog traffic during that time I thought I had to create a course specifically to teach others how they can get the same huge traffic results for their blog.

It’s taken me a few months now but finally Blog Traffic School is nearing completion. I’m currently writing every day and setting up the systems ready to take the first students on the course.

Step by Step Instructions

I’m a big fan of online courses and e-books. I purchase many of them each month and have spent thousands of dollars teaching myself how to be a better online marketer. The courses I find that work the best for me provide step-by-step instructions on how to do something. Theory is very important, but it’s more helpful if you are told when to do something and instructed with regular activities to complete.

I’ve taken these principles and applied them to Blog Traffic School. I’ve provided theory and practical activities at each step of the journey from 0 to 1000 daily readers. Each lesson’s activities build on the previous activities so you are working on your blog’s traffic in a proven step-by-step methodology.

The Pre-Launch

Okay, so what’s the point of this pre-launch blog you ask? Good question!

This blog is going to keep you updated on everything to do with the Blog Traffic School course. You can look forward to:

  • News about when the course will be released
  • Images from the course
  • Links to other blog traffic resources I’m currently producing
  • Special preview materials that will only be released on this blog

and the big news -

A chance to be on the beta testing student group who will get to take the course at more than 50% off the release price

AND

A chance to win a FREE enrollment
in the full Blog Traffic School course.

So stay tuned, it’s going to be a great pre-launch!
