Question Dealing with spam

Seeking others for opinions on this subject - I'd like to know how you deal with spam that is left on your blogs? Do you moderate any of it, or do you let it purge with out moderation? I'm just curious how others deal with this - thanks

Default Moderate & Word Verification

I've dealt with spam via word verification and moderation. I have a couple of wordpress blogs that I don't use that seem particularly prone to the problem. I don't see many problems but blatant promotion (not real contributions) and other spam is nipped in the bud with the two options.

All first time commenters are moderated.

Any comment with a banned word is nuked without me ever seeing it. I figure that people with legitimate comments about cialis are so few and far between that losing that comment is worth the trade-off of losing the headache of monitoring everything.

Other items are hand-moderated from my akismet spam-queue; if it gets more than a half dozen items (which happens maybe once every week or two based on my nuke-policy above) then I use the worst offendors plugin to take out the people who leave multiple spam comments since I figure that I don't need to see those either.

I am also using akismet to get rid of most of the spam at my wordpress blog.

Not much left to moderate, only a few spam commentes a day. Akismet is great!

Smile Thanks for your replies on Spam

Thanks for responding to my question on dealing with spam. I had put a post on my blog - Internet Help for PC Users and I came up with an acronym to describe my view on spam: Serious Painful Aggravating Messages.

Thanks for your help - Tim

I started with Akismet, but I got concerned and gave that one up. After all, it still lets spammers leave messages! I don't want them to think I'm a good target. The 'Bad Behavior' plugin prevents the post to begin with, so that's what I'm using now.

Smile Thanks Dixonge

Thanks, I've seen what you are talking about and have been concerned about that. I will consider the option you are using.

I haven't been keeping it up, but I also have a list of the worst IP addresses that spam me, so they can't connect to my site at all. That's of limited use, though, since most (well, a lot of) spammers use botnets.

Default Agreed on akismet

I have to agree with Jens, Akismet works great if you have spam problems on your WP blog. I used to put up with 140 comment spams on one of my blogs every day. Then, I installed Akismet. Now, I only get 1 to 5 spams a day, sometimes none, and Akismet catches all of them.
