I'd like to record some interviews I've been granted in audio format. To do that, I'd like to hear what tools you use for VOIP and VOIP recording, and also what tools you use for recording over the phone (i'm looking for a digital recording preferably).
Also, I'd appreciate instructions on how to use the tools.

Are you using a Mac or a PC?
Use skype for the VOIP bit. As for recording: On a Mac, use Audio Hijack (I forget the URL) On a PC, I think most people recommend Audacity.

I use Audacity for editing and recording some voice. I use Skype with HotRecorder for doing interviews. I use iTunes to do the Wav-to-MP3 conversion process because the Audacity converter doesn't do a good job on my PC.

For the podcasts that I produce for in the course of my dayjob (Opportunity Wales - an ecommerce advice and support service for Welsh SME's) I too use Skype with the Hotrecorder plug-in as it allows you capture both sides of the conversation.
However, I have to say that I don't use Audacity - I just couldn't get to grips with its interface. Instead I use a free application from an Aussie company called WavePad (Download here) which outputs MP3's directly so there's no need to install any additional stuff. Once I've edited out the ums and ahs, I then import the various bits of audio into a paid-for program called Propoganda. Initially I liked it, and it's OK if you're building quite complex podcasts (such as the early ones that I did) but lately I've been doing all of the editing in Wavepad. Once that's done, all you need is some web space and enough bandwidth and off you go ! |
