promoting a world-wide contest

After getting an email from Yaro, he suggested I post this here to ask for some opinions. I am the chairman in charge of running a world-wide 3 point shooting contest complete with prize money (with a basketball). I am thinking of using a blog to help promote this even though I already just started the website (http://www.threepointchampion.com). Anyone think blogging this is a good idea, bad idea or ? Any feedback is appreciated because I have never blogged in my life. P.S. The website is not at all finished!

My 2 cents would be to use adwords and a blog. It could take a long time to get a lot of responses from a blog alone. Blogs by themselves often take a good bit of time to build up an audience.

I definitely think a blog would be great for that type of promotion, but you also need some form of information page that clearly states what the competition is about. You could do that using a blog, or perhaps you could use the blog as an addition to the existing website so it won't be the focus, more an additional marketing channel.

Given the demographics you are targeting and the hype I expect you want to generate online I'm very confident a regularly updated blog will be very effective.
