Default How important is a name?

Hi All

I have a site that has changed in look, feel and focus. However my current name which is somewhat random, the inherent problem, is a (though this isn't major) is pagerank 3. Now I don't want to lose that but, I don't think I will get much search traffic for my subject with the current name.

The current site is called Kung Fu Cabbage*»*Film, Design and Business. 3 niches in one site.

It was a filmmaking site, but now is a creative business site using the film and design industries as illustrative examples based on personal experience.

Is it best to ditch the name in favour of something more descriptive or work towards making the old name a brand?

Thanks for any help.
Zane.

I'd probably opt for a relevant name, but if you name the site kung fu cabbage and make it relevant to the new focus it won't really matter, I don't think. I'd just make sure there was a good page explaining why the site is called kung fu cabbage.

Hi zanedickens!

I just popped over to take a look at your site. It seems you are very much at a crossroads with it.

You mention that the blog is about three niches...film making, design, and entrepreneurship. Can I make a suggestion...write three totally different blogs.

There are so many million (yes I said million) blogs out there, that readers tend to gravitate to those that fit their interests exactly. I think you are painting yourself into too tight a corner. Basically, the majority of readers you are attracting are entrepreneurs with design and film making experience...not a very large group.

For example, I'm interested in entrepreneurship, but have no interest in film making and I know there are thousands of blogs on entrepreneurship that would probably fit my needs better. My best friend, however, is interested in both, but he's not interested in design, so I wouldn't think he would really be a reader either.

On the other hand, each of these three groups are much larger if looked at separately. Then there is the problem of too much competition. In general, niche markets work very well, but it seems to me your niche is a little too narrow. Perhaps choosing two of the subjects to focus on...entrepreneurship with film making for example, would give you a nice niche that still generates a large audience.

With this in mind, I think your blog's name is fine. If you wanted to change it, I don't see the problem either. A page rank of 3 is not a big deal unless you are scoring very high on specific searches you are getting a ton of traffic from. Seeing that you have only 18 Feedburner subscribers, I'm guessing that traffic isn't that much.

My two cents. Good luck with the blog.
