Default Akismet Plugin - API #

I am starting a blog on Wordpress and started to activate the plug in for Akismet. It asked for an API # but I do not have one.

Because my blog will be on Wordpress, will I need to activate this plugin?

Thanks
Sherri

Hi, I am a newbie too, but when I signed up with my hosting company GoDaddy.com I was emailed my API key in my first email. Once you have installed it go to your plugins tab in the admin and you will see Action where you just click on activate. Hope that helps!

There should be a link to the wordpress.com site where you can register for an API key for akismet. You will need your own key in order to use spam filtering on your site, but it's really easy to get one. Just sign up for it on the page linked to on the plugin options page for akismet.

You can find out everything you need to know here: API Keys « WordPress.com

Also note that you can use your API key on more than one blog, so you only need to register for one once. Also, you can use it for other plugins created by Automattic, such as this one: WordPress › WordPress.com Stats « WordPress Plugins

Default Encrypting API#

Blaine
You have been so helpful. I truly appreciate it. The instructions indicate to encrypt the API certificate.

From what I have been reading regarding wordpress, I only need the certificate number. Do you really need to encrypt this? Can you explain this in laymans language for me?

Thanks
Again Sherri

After I registered for my API key, they sent me an email that told me what it was. I just cut and pasted that into the appropriate field in the akismet plugin configuration page in my wordpress admin section, and it worked. A couple of years later I decided to use the wordpress stats plugin, so I just copy and pasted it from my akismet setup page to my wordpressl.com setup page.
