I just thought of a way to increase traffic.
Has anyone done this or heard of it being done? Do you think it would work? Go to all of the most popular blogs. Respond in the comments section to many posts from that blog. Somehow get your website in the comment you leave That way you can use the popularity of those sites to promote your own site. In effect, your comment would enjoy tons of exposure and possibly get readers of the popular blogs to click on your site. Obviously if the popular blog is about new technology and your site is about how to get fleas off of your pets you might not get the traffic bump you were expecting just because you commented on the popular site. Make sense? What do you think? |

It's one of the best ways to build traffic, but don't be a spammer. Many sites use nofollow tags in comment links, so you don't get any SEO style benefit, but most sites will allow you to leave your name as a link. Usually, that's enough for me, unless I am talking about a specific article on one of my sites and I point people to that.
The real trick is making all of your comments ones that actually add value to the other persons site. This will build your profile because people will see that you know what you are talking about. Another good way in a similar vein is to join forums related to your niche. Put a link to your site in your signature; most forums don't nofollow your sigs. Just make sure what you post is relevant.

It's a way to build traffic, just like participating in forum is. But keep in mind that it is not necessarily a way to build PageRank and backlinks (for search engine rankings) since most blogs have a "nofollow" attribute on comment links. Yaro, myself, and many other bloggers have a plugin installed to disable this, so it actually does help your pagerank to comment. Check out one of my projects - The yesfollow Project - for more info.

You touched on one of the things that worries me about going this route for traffic.
I am afraid that even if I leave a comment to a post that is relevant and value-adding, my name (and my site) will keeping popping up in everyone's comment section, making my motives obvious and backfire. One of my big problems is worrying about alienating potential traffic. Having said that, based on my current popularity (handful of uniques a day) there is really no where for me to go but up. If 5 angry posters come to my site, my traffic is doubled. |

If you contribute, then people don't mind if you comment. Just don't put multiple links in your comment and don't link to anything that is not relevant. Usually, entering your website in the pace designated when you write your comment is enough.

joining forums must have done something good for me. i started blogging some 6mos ago and noticed yesterday a 3/10 PR on my index...or is my google bar fooling me???
here is what i do in the blogger forums: i really try to pay close attention what bloggers are asking and just join those discussions where i think a can make a contribution. most of them are appreciative and i guess, at least, visit your blog (would be nice if they'd leave a comment too), just as i do when i find a helpful post. aloha, pua |

Maybe I'll put a picture of a gorgeous lady on my front page. I've already visited your site three times to check out the photo.
I'm just kidding. Not about the picture but about coming back three times. I came back because you have a nice site with tons of good info about a beautiful place. There are quite a few sites that I found through some a link somewhere. However, once I visited the site I immediately bookmarked it. That is exactly what I would love to happen to my site. I have a bunch of posts about my experiences. Now I want to remove it all, or just demote it all to a sub-folder, and keep experimenting with content that holds interest. "Unique hits from a bookmark" is one of the traffic categories on my stats page with Startlogic. I'm starting to think that is a category that I should watch closely and start directing energy towards increasing that particular number. Good luck with your site

hey finally a fan!!! thanks soooo much for your nice words, for bookmarking my blog and coming back to it frequently. please, when you stop by next time, leave a comment. i'd be happy to see you there! i wanted to reciprocate and visited your blog but ran into a loading problem, then i did not find a comment tag and also got a little lost with defining the blog theme. after just 6 mos. of blogging, i am really not in the position to give advice but maybe a few images would help, a nice header and finding/defining your blog theme? but again what do i know. if you have not signed up for yaros newsletter, do it now. it helped me and others a lot on our way to becoming a blogger. good luck with your blog project. it is a working process! aloha, pua |

Funny you mention the newsletter.
I just received my first one today and it changed my life. OK, it didn't really change my life but between the newsletter and your comments about my site, I've decided to start over. You visited my site and immediately had problems, not good. Yaro's newsletter said if you want to build traffic and keep traffic you must do a couple of things. The first and foremost is content. The second is don't make your site public until it's ready. My site is just a handful of unrelated posts. They may be interesting to my family but no one else. Every site I see, no matter how crappy or how new, always had tons of content, links, comments, etc. It's clear that the good sites, like any good business was fully prepared to operated as soon as they opened their doors for business. Mcdonalds didn't start their business with one hamburger and one chair to eat at and build from there. New businesses need alot of money and time invested prior to selling one single thing. Blogs need alot of content and development before they put it on the web. I'm not saying you need two years worth of archives, fifty links, and a hundred posts, but you should at least have enough to keep someone coming back. So, I am going to take mine down and either make it much, much better or keep it down until I can find something productive to use my domain for. I couldn't decide what direction I wanted to go anyway. The initial reason I got a domain name hosted in the first place is because I have a really great idea for a product that will benefit just about everyone. My plan was to develop my idea and print my website on the product so folks could go to that website, read about the product, then buy the product. Somehow my commerce site turned into a blogsite. To be honest, the reason I switched was because I figured instead of the hassle and obstacle ridden path to successful product creation and sales, I could just write a blog and make a fortune with ads. Then my blog became my deceased parents therapy site, with no ads. I am going to stick to plan A and make a site that hawks my product. The problem with this plan is that I don't know how to make a professional website with everything I need on it to sell my product. I was attracted to Wordpress because it was a ready made website. All I had to do was plug stuff in. I decided I would just write about my product and that would sell it. Writing about the product will sell it, or I should say will generate interest in buyers, but the blog format can't help me with all of the other aspects of marketing and selling. Sorry for the rant, again. And I will leave a comment on your site. JP
