Is there a full spam moon or something?

Today, the amount of spam my blog receives went up about 2000% Is there something I probably did - beside write brilliant original content regularly, of course - that might have brought this on?

Maybe they spammed something that you didn't notice and saw that it worked?

It's probably just a phase. Usually when they find a new product or a new hole they can try spamming through, it picks up for a week or three and then dies back down to normal levels.

You may have new normal levels if you have recently gotten indexed for a spam friendly term, though.

Thanks for this tip. I recognize all the emails that posted in the past week. But one thing that is new from yesterday is a trackback from another busy aviation site.

I wonder if that's how this stuff got in? Luckily I keep deleting it before it ever appears.

The system that I use is a wee bit cumbersome, but it works out all right. I am using the akismet as the first line of defense, and the worst offendors plugin to manage the akismet lists. I can take a few hundred spam messages and whittle it down to 20 before even looking at it by using worst offendors. Then I manually check those to see if there are any false positives and de-spam them.

I also have comment moderation on. Anything with a couple of links or from somebody that hasn't commented before gets moderated before going live. That keeps the ones that akismet misses out.
