The Keyword density of a webpage is important for SEO, because it is the number of keywords (or phrases) compared to the total amount of words. The keyword density influences the listing of a page for certain search phrases. Optimizing a pages Keyword density is a way of onpage optimization and can increase search engine listings. It is not as effective as getting inbound links with anchor texts though. There are many different ideas about the optimal keyword density, but I believe it’s much more important to have natural text and focus on these onpage optimization tips.

The various search engines, including Google, Yahoo, and MSN Search consider keyword density as part of their search algorithm. Each search engine has a different mathematical equation regarding the density of keywords that is rewarded with higher search ranking placement. There is also a different level of tolerance between the different search engines as to the degree of density permitted before a penalty is imposed.

You certainly don't want to simply pad your keywords everywhere because you will actually get a negative effect from it. From my own research around 3% - 6.5% is optimal. Anything above that upper limit and Google especially will not be tolerant of it and consider it keyword padding.
