COM is the most useful because it was the most widely used in
TV adverts and offline promotional media when the internet first started getting popular and mainstream. As such, many people now think of all websites ending in COM, simply because that's all they've ever seen. I agree with some of the posters above - if you can't get the COM that you wanted, choose a slightly different name that is available with COM and get that. If you have the NET or BIZ, you *will* lose some traffic to the COM due to type in traffic. Of course, if you're starting charity sites get ORG, government sites get GOV and if you're creating specific country niche sites then get the specific extension like CO.UK.
