I'm doing some research about how people personalize internet business connections in a mostly impersonal business environment.
How do you decide who you will do business with when you can't meet face to face and may not even be on the same continent? How do you provide personal service? Does it make a difference if you have a photo to go with the name? (it does for me) For me, outside the internet, its about that gut feeling when you are face to face. Long ago it was about a hand shake. A suggestion from someone I truely trust goes a long way, but the people I know and trust, don't know about the ways of the internet entrepreneur! My son helps me out, but he is the only person I know in person in this field. |

Reading someone's blog is definitely a good way to establish a connection and feel like you are getting to know them better. Especially if they publish personal info or very detailed backstory.
I think my business timeline and personal blog posts often work wonders for me in terms of creating more personal connections online. Skype is good too!

A photo with the name does make a difference while deciding who to do business with. Other than that a telephone no. helps as I can speak directly to the concerned person and get to know him better than I would with online chat or through e-mail.

On my blog this really happens through the comments. I like a photo and some information about who they are, their story, their approach (usually on their About page).
If I was looking for a business partner I'd certainly check out their blog if they had one. It would be the feel I got from the blog which would probably be most important. It would also be important to see if I thought they knew what they were talking about. Depending on how much we were going to be involved their would be some emails and perhaps phone calls. If they were in Australia then perhaps a face to face meeting (I live in Australia and don't have the budget to afford international flights at the moment.). It would probably be a process that took some time so that I got a feel for what the person was like. Hope this makes sense and is helpful. |
