There are many ways to market a website. It really depends on what your website is about and who your target audience is.

Social marketing is one of the most effective methods these days: Some suggestions:
- Create a Facebook page and group and talk about your site and your products
- Write interesting articles on user content sites like Squidoo with links back to your site
- Post videos to Metacafe and You Tube with links in your description and profile
- (as suggested by spadespin) Bookmark everything with relavent tags
- Set up a blog within your site, post interesting articles and market your RSS feed.

Also target long tail keyphrases in each of your web pages and apply basic SEO to get you good placement in the SERPS.

What about paying for advertising? Are you willing to pay at all? You can buy advertising on high-traffic blogs, or if you are willing to pay for something more, there are always sites like Dojo Hut that will help you out.

If you are on a low budget, however, I'd go for posting on forums that have some relationship with your site, and even start writing reviews and articles about your site. I hope that helps!

Article writing can be an effective means of drawing traffic to your Site. Write interesting Articles, and submit them to several of the free Submission Sites. Your article will include a Resource box--this is where you "plug" your Site. I write several articles and have found the traffic to not only increase, but since they are interested in my Topic ( related to my Site ) they are targeted traffic. Anyone can write articles, submission is free and it just takes minutes to do it. Two of the most popular Submission sites are Articlesbase and ezinearticles. Give it a shot, and good luck!!

I think that my next step is definitely going to be writing articles. I have yet to do so, but after reading around this forum, it seems like the best way to start out, especially since you're reaching out to the people who actually want to read what you have to say, and thus will be more interested in your site or product. There are ways to market your site:

post sites in social networking sites
post in bookmarking sites
interact in forums (like this one!*wink wink!*)
add keywords to your post
make your content interesting as possible!
